Charlie Adam aims dig at Liverpool new boy Shaqiri

Stoke midfielder Charlie Adam has aimed an extraordinary criticism in the direction of Liverpool new boy Xherdan Shaqiri, by revealing his former colleague was allowed to get away with things and the team turned into 'water carriers' for him.

Adam, himself a former Liverpool man, was asked for his opinion on his recently departed team-mate after Shaqiri sealed a summer switch to Anfield.

Speaking on BBC Radio 5Live, Adam gave his views on the Switzerland international and imparted some information about what went on during his time in the Midlands.

'We had a meeting and the previous manager went around us all and basically called us water carriers - and he was the world class player we had in our team,' said Adam.

'Basically, we had to get him on the ball to go and make something happen, which was difficult to take.

'For the players we had in our squad and after what we'd achieved at that club, it was hard to accept.

'The manager would let him get away with certain things, but we were in a relegation battle,' he added.

Adam's words were aimed at former manager Paul Lambert, who used Shaqiri as the spearhead in the Potters forward line as they battled to retain their Premier League status.

Sevilla have officially presented their two new signings, Joris Gnagnon and Sergi Gomez, who has indicated that he looks forward to the upcoming Supercopa de Espana game against Barcelona.

Having grown up at La Masia, the Catalans' youth academy, Gomez was handed his competitive debut by Pep Guardiola against his current team at Estadio Ramon Sanchez Pizjuan.

"For me it's important, because I grew up there and it was also here [in Seville] where I debuted with Barcelona's first team," he said.

"It can be a day to cherish, although it will be difficult and there are plenty of players to face Barcelona."

Gomez went on to share his enthusiasm for moving to Andalusia.

"I am happy to be here and to continue growing; there is nothing better than a club like this one," he added. "I'm going to give everything to make Sevilla grow from the first moment.

"It is an important step in my career and I take it with pride, knowing that I can continue improving here and contributing to achieve our collective goals."

On his part, the French defender has claimed that he has already started to adapt to his team.

"It is very hot, if we compare it with France, but I have had the good fortune to speak with the French [players]," noted Gnagnon.

"The Spaniards have also received me very well and although it's true that it's not easy to move abroad, I think I'm going to integrate well.

"I am very happy to be here, as playing at Sevilla at my age is wonderful. I am very proud, as it is clear that coming to LaLiga is a step forward in my career.

"I train every day with Sevilla to better understand Spanish football."
